Shark Fishing

throwing the combination of excellent weather, perfect water, scott hamilton, an awesome guide and a good friend should happen more often in my world.

we started the day by hunting for bait.  we saw a herd of sharks, a couple of big jacks on a mission but not much else. eventually, jared caught a blue.

then we scouted around for more, not much luck, so we headed deeper.  that’s where we hooked the bar jack.  a pretty little fish that did a bit of dancing for me.  in the distance we saw an oil slick that turned out to be two schools of blues.

scott used the teaser to draw fish out of the shoal – we pulled in about eight blues, threw a few in the well and tossed the others back.  we circled back to the sharks and started our drift.  sharks were popping up and honing in on the fly but none were hitting.

we drifted and ran, drifted and ran, there were spinners leaping all around – it was such a tease.  the anticipation was remarkably intense.  on one of the runs, i was sitting up front when a spinner jumped right in front of the boat – it pulled off a double horizontal spin, i thought it was going to land in my lap.  the next thing i saw was his white belly disappearing under the bow.  :(.  when we settled back into the drift, the sharks suddenly became more active and jared hooked one that ran to the beach.

after a good long strong fight, i had a really happy friend

… really really really happy.

we hooked another nine or so. it was so thrilling i can’t remember how many we actually got to the boat, maybe four?  at one point, both jared and scott’s lines were tttzzzzzzinnnnnggginggg off in opposing directions.  good good good good day.
